Our bit to making this world better

By Scott Wooden, Head of Operations Secure ID & Transactions Business Division

SMARTRAC in Thailand has started another exemplary Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Several projects have already been concluded, promoting environmental conservation and community outreach.

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching”, Mahatma Gandhi once said. In line with that assertion, the employees of our SMARTRAC production site in Ayutthaya continue to make this world a better place with manageable activities in their neighborhood.

The 1st CSR project in 2016 took place from July 8-11, under the project title “House Improvement for the Elderly in Ayutthaya” and was held in conjunction with and supported by the local Ministry of Social Development. This project was focused on providing an old lady with a new home. Mrs. Bunlaeng had suffered several strokes of fate, including the passing of her husband and son, and was unable to make a living on her own due to severe health issues. She was thrilled to see her dilapidated house get a complete makeover by hardworking SMARTRAC volunteers.

Demonstrating social and environmental commitment

The second CSR project organized by SMARTRAC in Thailand was an Environmental Conservation Program held on August 10, 2016 under the project heading “Siam Weed Elimination” at nearby Khao Yai National Park.

The grasslands of the Khao Yai National Park are an essential part of the local habitat and provide foraging grounds for the resident wildlife. According to the Khao Yai National Park Office, compared to other organizations involved in the past, SMARTRAC broke the record for weed removal in terms of quantity gathered and land area covered.

Over 660 lbs. of Siam Weed were removed from a 7,000 square yard plot in the Khao Yai National Park.

The latest initiative took place in September with the project name “Cleaning Phoot Thai Sa Wun Temple in Ayutthaya”. The temple has been built 663 years ago and houses 108 precious Buddha images in a 30 meter high pagoda. Here, the measures involved – amongst other things – painting the walls, removing cobwebs and cleaning of the building.
