RFID ENABLES A FAST AND CONVENIENT WAY TO SELL FOOD THAT’S RIGHT ON THE MONEY

RFID is helping Sterling Services to implement a new service model that sets a new standard for convenience.

Background

Sterling Services is a leading food services provider in the Detroit metro area. The company supplies vending, dining room management and executive catering to a wide variety of clients – from offices and schools to fitness clubs and hospitals.

Challenge

Sterling Services aspired to implement a new service model that would set a new standard for convenience while positively impacting sales.

Solution

Sterling Services now operates unmanned stores on customers’ premises that are open 24/7 and offer 300 to 400 items for purchase. Warehouse workers use a Zebra® RZ400™ printer to batch-print SMARTRAC ShortDipole RFID tags as small-format pressure sensitive labels and apply them to products. Customers pay for items at an RFID-powered self-check-out kiosk, which automatically detects RFID-tagged goods, totals the cost and processes payments.

Success

Store data is transmitted to Sterling Services’ backend software, enabling the company to closely monitor inventory and sales. The RFID-enabled solution prevents the theft of merchandise. If a customer tries to leave the store without paying, fixed RFID readers sound an alarm.
