SMART-LOOP PRELAM® Makes eID Documents More Robust

eID documents such as eDrivers' licenses, eResidence permit cards or border crossing documents require strong durability and longevity, combined with high performance and a certain degree of security. SMARTRAC's new UHF (Ultra High Frequency) inlay fulfills these requirements and additionally enables trouble-free document manufacturing: SMART-LOOP PRELAM®.

 

SMARTRAC is introducing SMART-LOOP PRELAM, which offers manufacturers of UHF eID documents several unique features. This new product provides an extended read range with a very small antenna, minimal thickness (from 100 to 250 μm), high performance and unmatched mechanical durability and longevity. These features also translate into reduced complexity, resulting in easier handling of the pre-laminates during eID document manufacturing processes.

 

Benefitting from Technological Expertise

 

SMART-LOOP PRELAM’s advantages derive from SMARTRAC’s patented wire-embedding and inductive coupling technologies. Wire embedding is used for the inlay’s antenna, while inductive coupling supersedes the physical connection between chip and antenna, and incorporates two components: firstly, the chip and chip loop on a thin carrier bonded via flip-chip assembly; secondly, the wire-embedded antenna, which is connected to the chip loop via induction rather than by physical contact.

 

10-Year Warranty Reflects Industry-Leading Robustness and Reliability


There is no damageable intermetallic connection between chip and antenna, making SMART-LOOP PRELAM one of the most robust and reliable PRELAM cards available on the market. To underline this, SMARTRAC is granting eID document manufacturers a 10-year warranty. Like any IC used in UHF pre-laminates, the integrated Impinj Monza 4D chip does not allow the storage of personal data. Instead, this data is obtained from external databases when the eID document is read. SMART-LOOP PRELAMs have an operating frequency of 860 - 960 MHz (UHF band), and feature a sheet format of up to 510 x 680mm. They comply with the ISO 18000-6C and EPC Class 1 Gen2 international standards. PC, PVC, PET and composites are available as carrier materials.

SMARTRAC and eID: Extending a Success Story

 

SMART-LOOP PRELAM operates in the UHF band, which is used widely in US eGovernment projects, where SMARTRAC’s inlays hold a very strong market position. In 2007, the Department of Homeland Security started to promote the incorporation of RFID technology for citizen identification programs.

 

One of the first projects resulted in the PASSCard, a land border crossing citizen credential, which may be used as an alternative to a State Department-issued passport.

Another program was Global Entry, spearheaded by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, which allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to receive expedited clearance on arrival in the U.S. A third program is for EDLs (Enhanced Drivers’ Licenses). These cards provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship, and make travel easier, as holders are allowed to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean via land or sea entry points. Even the world-famous Green Card now utilizes RFID technology.

 

Not all eID applications in the US and other countries require inlays that offer inductive antenna coupling. However, whatever the requirement - traditional copper wire or printed antenna technologies - SMARTRAC can provide the appropriate solution.
